BIRGUNJ: The prevalence of child marriage and dowry system is high in Parsa district owing to poverty, illiteracy and conventional social norms and values, said local stakeholders.
At a programme organised here on Thursday by Community Legal Research Centre, Parsa, they said the high prevalence of child marriage in the district is attributed to the lack of civic education and awareness followed by ineffective enforcement of existing laws on children.
They demanded massive public awareness campaign and effective implementation of related laws for the prevention of child marriage and dowry system.
Nepal is in the third rank among the South Asian countries having high prevalence of child marriage.
