BIRATNAGAR: Nepali Congress General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula today said the Nepali people will not get the feel of peace until the Maoist party manages its weapons.
“The people won’t be fearless until the government takes charge of Maoist weapons,” Sitaula told cadres in Biratnagar today. “No constitution drafted under the shadow of weapons can address people’s feelings, so it is imperative that the UCPN-M submit its weapons to the government at the earliest and show their commitment towards peace and statute,” he reasoned, adding, “The constitution cannot be written without completing the peace process.”
Further, coming down heavily on the Maoist party’s modus operandi of ignoring its frequent agreements, Sitaula took exception to the Maoist attempt to disrupt the peace process on different pretexts.
“The Maoists are bleeding the state coffers dry by not completing the peace process. They are plotting to win the upcoming elections by using combatants from cantonments and their weapons,” he reasoned, adding that there was no deliverance for the country owing to the Maoist lust for state power at the cost of peace.
The NC leader demanded that the Bhattarai-led government step down as per the seven-point deal and said a Congress-led government would accomplish the remaining tasks of peace and statute. “Peace process has reached the present stage owing to NC and it is only Congress that can accomplish the remaining tasks,” he noted.
