Druk Air Open Golf this weekend

KATHMANDU: The first Druk Air Open Golf Tournament is scheduled here at the Gokarna Golf Club from January 14-15.

Druk Air, the national flag carrier of Bhutan, is the main sponsor of the tournament that is divided into two parts. The

first day will see an open tournament which will be participated in by a total of 100 golfers including 20 amateurs from Bhutan under the stableford 3/4 handicap format, informed Deepak Acharya, Sr Director at the Gokarna Golf Club.

The Open tournament will feature prizes for winners and runners up in men and women sections and winners in senior and junior categories. Other prizes to be won include best gross, longest drive, closest to the pin and most birdies. The nine-hole junior category play — to be contested by 10 players — will be held on Friday.

The second day will witness the match play tournament between the Bhutanese and Gokarna players under the four-ball-better-ball format on Sunday. Twenty players each from Bhutan and the Gokarna Club will take part in the event, added Acharya.

“We are organising the tournament for the first time and we hope the initiative will continue in the years to come,” said Sonam Wangchuk, Marketing Manager of Druk Air. “The Bhutanese golfers are keen to play here and hope they will enjoy the hospitality as well,” he added. Wangchuk also said the players agreed to come to Nepal on their own after the Druk Air corresponded with various golf clubs in Bhutan. Nidup Dorji, Station Manager of Druk Air and Pavitra Karki, Managing Director of Danfe Travel Centre, the General Sales Agent of Druk Air in Nepal, were also present on the occasion.
